The State Legislature has reintroduced legislation to regulate abortion clinics. This legislation, called HB 2829, is identical to the 2005 bill that was vetoed by Governor Sebelius. But dirty tricks derailed the legislation. A copy of the bill can be found here. As reported in LifeNews on February 16, 2006, "Rep. Nancy Kirk, a Topeka Democrat, originally wrote the bill to have the same standards apply to all medical facilities, but the committee rewrote it to apply only to abortion centers after complaints from the Kansas Medical Society. Nancy Kirk had taken political contributions from Tiller. Nancy Kirk Those opposed to this bill feared another veto showdown like the one that occurred in 2005. So on 23 February 2006, an amendment was again introduced to water down the bill. The weakened bill passed by only one vote (63 votes vs. 62 votes). This effectively killed the bill for yet another year.
