George Tiller is America's most notorious abortionist. By his own count, he has performed over sixty-thousand abortions. (Listen to Tiller say this by clicking here.) George Richard Tiller was born in Wichita, Kansas on August 8, 1941. He graduated from Wichita East High School in 1959. He went to the University of Kansas where he graduated with a degree in zoology in 1963. He attended the University of Kansas School of Medicine where he graduated in 1967. He then had a medical internship in the Navy. In 1970, George's parents, a sister, and a brother-in-law were killed when their small plane crashed near Yellowstone National Park.
After the crash, George returned to Wichita. He took up his father's medical practice and adopted his orphaned baby nephew. Tiller told the Wichita Eagle that he performed his first abortions in 1974 at Wesley Medical Center. Around 1976, he started providing outpatient abortions at his clinic. He quit performing abortions at Wesley, because his patients had to walk past the maternity ward. When these women saw the babies, they often would change their mind. This cost him too many patients. Even though he has done little besides abortion for many years, he still considers himself a "family practitioner" continuing in the footsteps of his late father. He maintains his membership in the American Academy of Family Physicians. He signs his name George R. Tiller, MD, DABFP.
DABFP stands for "Diplomate American Board of Family Practice". In 1984, the Kansas Board of Healing Arts took disciplinary action against Tiller because he abused alcohol and Demerol (a powerful narcotic painkiller.) In 1993, Tiller was shot by a woman with a pistol. He underwent surgery and returned to work the next day. Tiller advertises his late-term abortion services on his own website and on other abortion websites. He made a video in 1996 that advertises late-term abortion to women who have been told their baby is abnormal. This video is distributed through ob/gyn doctors and genetics counselors.
Since Tiller specializes in late-term abortion, he has become the target of massive Pro-Life protests. In 1991, protesters blockaded his clinic and shut it down for several weeks resulting in thousands of arrests. Jeanne Elizabeth (Guenther) Tiller is George's wife. The Tillers live in an exclusive gated community. They are members of Reformation Lutheran Church where they attend regularly. They have four grown children. Tiller is highly intelligent, tenacious, and very clever. Abortion isn't just a job or a business to Tiller. He views abortion as his "calling".
Tiller seems to revel in notoriety. Where most abortionists prefer anonymity, Tiller is a showman. He views himself as a champion for women. Though he is reluctant to give interviews to the media, he travels the world to give speeches to carefully-selected audiences. He contributes huge sums of money to political candidates who support easy abortion.
Tiller is interviewed for a proabortion documentary. His lapel pin repeats one of his slogans, "Attitude is Everything".
